THE HERB LADY (that's me):

Being the one who puts this email together, I have the perk of compiling my report LATER than the other vendors.  Today's weather report indicates the rain will at least "ease up" by Friday and Saturday.  That means you will quite probably find the market open, with vendors and whatever wares they could pick in the rain!  Please come check us out and brighten our day with your sunny smiles.

NOTICE: For the life of me I can't remember who I sold peppermint to last week.  I realized a couple of hours later I sold you cinnamon basil instead.  Please let me know and I'll make good for it!

FIGS:  If the market was today I'd have tons.  I'm picking every day.  By Saturday, it is anybody's guess. They have a very short shelf life. My own method, by the way, is to lay them out individually on my counter with wax paper, paper towels, newspaper, something under them.  Wash them only as you eat them.  I don't refrigerate them, that's when they seem to get really yucky. Danny didn't mention them in his report, but I'm thinking he'll have some too unless the Odem varmints got hungry.

HELD OVER THIS WEEK:  With purchase of $3 or more at my table, cilantro seeds to take home and sow in your own space.  OR, your choice instead of purple larkspur seeds while they last.

I hope to bring:

Basil. Summer is a rough time at the market for lettuce.  Use this, or parsley, on your sandwiches instead.

Lemongrass...fresh for cooking, dried for tea. Make up a batch, put in a mister and spray yourself to ward off mosquitos.

Bay leaves, cook with them fresh or dry and use them for bug control (weevils, roaches, etc) in your cabinets and cannisters. PUT THEM AT THE POINT OF ANT ENTRY.  ANTS HATE THE SMELL AND WILL AVOID THEM.

Pineapple sage
Tarragon
Epazote.  Cook with your beans, a natural Beano!  Saute with veggies, add cheese, roll in a tortilla.  Or chop in scrambled eggs.

CHOCOLATE MINT.  ADD TO FRUIT SALADS, ICE CREAM, FRUIT SMOOTHIES.  BREW WITH YOUR COFFEE (my favorite).
\par \par
\par

Greek oregano
Thyme
Spearmint

Variety herb mixes for green salads and fruit salads.  Just add your greens or fruit.

VEGGIE SAUTE (or stir fry) IN A BOX. Variety of vegetables and herbs plucked from our garden. Everything you need for taking home and putting in the pan...minus the oil or water!

Flowers to brighten your day.

YARROW TO USE IN YOUR COMPOST AND WHEN POTTING PLANTS.  BREAKS UP NUTRIENTS AND ENRICHES THE SOIL.

As always, the HARVEST CORPUS CHRISTI: FEED PEOPLE, NOT 'POSSUMS donation basket will be next to The Herb Lady's table.  Buy an extra veggie, put it in the basket, and off it goes to the Women's Shelter following the market.  You can pick up more information about the project at the table as well, or email HarvestCorpusChristi@yahoo.com or phone Teresa at 361-334-3908.

I have a recipe I love, cut out from Better Homes and Gardens but no idea when. It looks fairly recent, in that it isn't tattered!  You'll find many of the ingredients currently at the market.  Of course, I throw in fresh herbs...usually either tarragon, basil, mint, thyme...whatever I have.

Sweet Potato Barley Salad

1 cup regular (not quick cooking) barley
1 cup frozen soybeans (YOU have access to FRESH!)
1 large sweet potato
1/3 cup olive oil
1/4 cup balsamic vinegar
1 tsp garlic salt (I use fresh chopped garlic instead)
1 cup fresh baby spinach
1 cup golden raisins
2 medium carrots, shredded
1/2 cup thin red onion wedges

1.  Rinse barley in sieve under running water until water runs clear.  In medium saucepan bring barley and 3 cups water to boiling; reduce heat.  Simmer, uncovered, 20 to 25 minutes or until tender; drain.  Rinse cooked barley in colander under cold running water until cooled; drain well.

2.  Cook those fresh soybeans only briefly.  I microwaved some I had this week, in a small amount of water. Drain.  Then scrub sweet potato and pierce several times with fork.  Wrap in paper towel.  Microwave 5 minutes or until soft when gently pressed. (My microwave definitely doesn't take that long.)  When cool enough to handle, remove skin and dice (I leave the skin on.)

3.  For dressing, in small bowl whisk to combine olive oil, vinegar, garlic and black pepper to taste. (I refrigerate this for awhile to blend the flavors).  When ready to serve, you may arrange everything separately and pass the dressing.  I prefer to mix everything but the spinach together, including the dressing, then put it on top of the spinach to serve.

We usually have surprises at the market.  All vendors may not be represented in this report!  As always, we appreciate your support and look forward to seeing you on Saturday.
